ChloraPrep® is the first 2 percent chlorhexidine
gluconate (CHG) and 70 percent isopropyl alcohol (IPA)
patient preoperative skin preparation to meet the Food and Drug
Administration’s (FDA) strict clinical requirements for a
New Drug Application (NDA).
The persistent activity provided by chlorhexidine is highly recommended
for use in more than 10 evidence-based guidelines, including guidelines
published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“The properties that make chlorhexidine effective include
its strong affinity for binding to skin, its high level of antibacterial
activity, and its prolonged residual effects.”
- Rapid activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Persistent antibacterial activity— prevents regrowth of
microorganisms on the skin for at least 48 hours
- One application of ChloraPrep exceeds FDA criteria for a patient
preoperative skin preparation antiseptic
- Unlike povidone iodine, ChloraPrep (CHG) remains active in the
presence of blood, serum, and other protein-rich biomaterials
- 50% reduction in the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream
infections compared to povidone iodine (as shown in randomized,
controlled trials)
